Peter Joseph Fletcher AM

Peter brings a wealth of experience in cardiology and health care redesign to SHCH. Despite retiring as Director of Cardiology at John Hunter Hospital and Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Newcastle, Peter continued working as a clinical cardiologist in Newcastle 1 day a week and teaching undergraduate medical students until September 2024. Much of his recent work in cardiology has involved re-engineering of cardiology services particularly at a state level. This work focussed particularly on the management of heart attack, especially in rural areas. For many years he was a member of the Ministry's State-wide Cardiology Network, and co-Chair for 3 years. ln recognition of his broad contribution to cardiovascular medicine, Peter was made a Life Member of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and the National Heart Foundation and in 2014 was awarded Membership of the Order of Australia (AM).
